I never realized how much I loved this mechanical pencil until I used a different one.

I purchased one from Amazon a few months ago because another artist/influencer was all hyped about it. I’m easy to impress with new shiny objects and so I fell for it.

Guys, if you sketch with a pencil or do any erasing, the typical mechanical pencil is not for you. And especially the ones with those tiny erasers hiding under a cap. No matter how pink they are.

Unless you don’t mind carrying around a separate eraser with you, I would get the one I’m about to show you. I sketch wherever I can and that’s usually on the couch. So an extra eraser is just annoying to have around.

For artists, and anyone doing more than just writing with it, checkout my favorite mechanical pencil.

Meet the SumoGrip pencil

This one my friends, is a keeper.

It’s made by Sakura, you know, the same brand that makes the awesome Micro pens. So you know it’s gotta be good.

I picked one up at a Utrecht store back in college because I needed one and this was the first thing I saw. I didn’t even think about it. But then I discovered it’s magic.

Look at that GIANT eraser!

It’s a beauty guys, and you know what? It’s been 10+ years on that pencil and the eraser is still perfect, not dried out at all. And it didn’t need a cap or anything, you just twist it back in and twist out as you need more.

It comes in 3 sizes of lead. 0.5mm, 0.7mm and 0.9mm.

I use the 0.5mm for general use and writing and the other two for more sketching when I need some thick lines, like outlines or shading.

And you can always get them in a different hardness for your specific needs. Like a 4B for super soft dark lines or a 2H for super light and sharp lines. Here’s a list of some great leads.

Another thing that’s great is the big cushy grip, it’s got little ridges so your fingers don’t slip, and it’s thick, which makes it much easier to hold than some other pencils that are really thin and slippery.

If you’re as obsessed with finding the perfect mechanical pencil for your needs, because let’s face it, no one carries around a pencil sharpener anymore, be sure to give this one a try and let me know how you like it.
