Stop feeling guilty for breaking your routine

Did you set goals for yourself recently?

Were you following a routine for a few weeks and then it all went out the window?

Do you feel guilt and unwillingness to start again?

 

Yup, that's what I'm dealing with too. 

It totally sucks, doesn't it? I love starting new things, experimenting with new routines and activities, but what I hate the most is when I have to start it all over again.

New year, new routine! And then things get in the way.

How many of you started a new routine on New Year's Day, or any Monday for that matter? And why does it always have to be a Monday?

I started an exercise program a couple months ago. Yes, I started on a Monday. I was doing great for about 4 weeks and then my kids got the flu, and then I got the flu. Days flew by without me doing anything related to fitness. I felt guilty, I hated it, I wanted to work out, I just didn't have the energy.

And once I had broken the routine it all went down hill from there. I couldn't get motivated to start again, I felt like picking up where I left off was somehow cheating because I missed a couple weeks. I started eating crappy food, I lost energy and I just felt blah. 

So where did I go from there?

I weighed my options. I could either go back to Day One of the program or just pick up where I left off and pretend nothing happened.

Guess what I did....
I went right into week 5.

See, if I had gone all the way back to week one, I would feel even more like a failure. Like a kid in school who has to repeat a whole year all over again. I did not like that feeling. And sure, taking a break and then jumping into the next week is a bit challenging because my body was already getting used to sitting on the couch doing nothing at night. But, it feels so much better to be able to say I finished the whole program, then to be stuck at week 3 forever, because the kids are bound to get sick again, something will come up again. And when it does, I will just pick up where I left off and eventually get to week 12. If I don't I'll always be behind.

If you started the work, you're already half way there

So don't give up on your new routines, goals or dreams, if you started the work, you're already half way there. It's the first step that is the hardest, don't make it harder by having to do it all over again and again and again. Just pick up where you left off and keep on going. It may be challenging at first, you may be slower and it might suck, but at least you will get to the finish line.
